Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha is consistently voted Portugal's most beautiful beach — a distinction it has held in multiple national and international rankings for over a decade, and one that it earns through the sheer geological improbability of its setting: a relatively small cove of golden sand completely enclosed by a dramatically sculpted landscape of golden ochre limestone cliffs, isolated rock stacks, natural sea arches, and interconnected underwater corridors that create one of the finest snorkelling environments in the country. The beach itself is reached by a cliff-top staircase of about 150 steps from the car park above, which limits casual access and keeps visitor numbers at a manageable level even in peak season.

The rock formations surrounding the beach represent the finest example of the Algarve's distinctive limestone geology — layers of compressed marine sediment deposited 150 million years ago when this coastline lay beneath a shallow tropical sea, subsequently uplifted and carved by millennia of Atlantic wave action into the extraordinary sculptural forms visible today. Walking the clifftop path east or west from the beach at low tide reveals additional arches, sea caves, and rock platforms, with the famous Algar Seco formations (a network of cliff-top rock corridors and a natural swimming hole) accessible 500 metres to the east along the clifftop trail.

The snorkelling at Praia da Marinha is among the best accessible from any Portuguese beach: the underwater rock corridors between the natural stacks extend 5–15 metres below the surface, sheltering large populations of sea bream, mullet, wrasse, and octopus, and the water clarity in the summer months reaches 12–15 metres. The rock platforms accessible at low tide — particularly around the isolated stack at the beach's southern end — teem with sea anemones, starfish, hermit crabs, and the vivid purple sea urchins that are harvested locally and appear on Algarve restaurant menus as ouriços-do-mar.

Getting there: 5km east of Carvoeiro, signposted from the N125 coastal road. Limited parking (arrives fills by 9am in July–August). Bus service from Lagoa runs in season. Best time to visit: May–June and September for calm Atlantic conditions essential for snorkelling and the staircase rock pool access; early morning in any month for the best light on the ochre cliffs and near-empty beach.
